In Memoriam:
Benson A. Wolman, a nationally-recognized constitutional and public
interest lawyer, was Chief Executive and General Counsel of the Equal
Justice Foundation from June 2005 through November 2007. Before heading
the EJF staff, Wolman’s private practice involved civil and criminal
litigation in both the trial and appellate arenas of federal and state
courts, focusing on the areas of public interest law, constitutional law,
civil rights, white collar criminal defense, and the representation and
counseling of lawyers and other professionals. Wolman litigated on behalf
of the rights of the downtrodden (employees denied their civil rights)
and the uptrodden (employers such as AT & T), and as a pro bono attorney
he successfully represented popular parties--including representing Ohio
Supreme Court Justice Maureen O’Connor overcoming efforts to discipline
her for First-Amendment protected political campaign ads - as well as
those who are unpopular - including the Ku Klux Klan for whom he secured
a Supreme Court ruling giving them the right to display a cross at the
Ohio Statehouse [Capitol Square Review Bd. v. Pinette, 515 U.S. 753
(1995)]. |

1936 - 2007 |
Central Ohio lawyers seven times

Association (1992-1996), chaired its Professionalism Committee for
two years, and chaired its Federal Courts Committee for two years.
He served as president of the Central Ohio Association of Criminal
Defense Lawyers. Wolman was a frequent public speaker on a wide
range of subjects, and published a number of articles on legal
controversies in professional and scholarly journals.
He earned his B.A. degree from Northwestern University in 1958 and
graduated magna cum laude from the Capital University Law School in
1988, following which he clerked for U.S. District Judge George C.
Smith. Earlier, as the Executive Director of the American Civil
Liberties Union of Ohio for seventeen years, Mr. Wolman became well
known as an advocate of individual rights. He was a member of the
National Advisory Council of the ACLU, and served as a member of
its national, state, and local boards of directors, and as a
